Packet-Mode Video-Conferencing

Long distance audio-videoconferencing can be achieved using two different technologies: conventional circuit-based CODECs and packet-based workstation systems. In the medium term we foresee a progressive integration of both technologies. In the current state of the art, these technologies appear to be complementary, and several initiatives have been undertaken to make use of both of them in parallel:

• Circuit-based CODEC solutions are under active investigation. A CODEC/ISDN based system --- compatible with the equipment in use in the ERVN (US Energy Research Videoconferencing Network) --- should be made available at CERN in the very short term.
• An evaluation programme has been started to validate the options of packet-based videoconferencing and to better assess the future of this technology with real users. This programme is described below.
