After many years of faithful service the dxcern Ultrix service will be
stopped towards the end of 1996. We are aware of the fact that dxcern is
still serving many users, but we are forced to take this decision for
several reasons, e.g.:
Digital is encouraging Ultrix users to migrate to Digital Unix,
which provides a richer environment, and is under active
development, whereas Ultrix support will only consist in
fixing existing bugs,
the availability of other public Unix services at CERN: cernsp
a DEC PLUS Service running Digital Unix (formerly OSF/1) planned
for spring or early summer 1996,
the need for rationalisation as resources, especially manpower,
As of mid-March, group administrators will no longer be able to register
accounts on dxcern, and people wishing to get such an account will have
to contact the UCO.
If these plans seriously inconvenience you, please let us know in time
so that we can get together and talk about alternatives.
