Private News Groups

  J. Casas, M. Marquina and A. Taddei CN/DCI

The CERNVM news system, XNEWS, supported not only public news groups similar to the USENET (Internet) newsgroups that anyone could read, but also the possibility to have private newsgroups which were readable only by a restricted set of people.

Since

we will soon be offering a private newsgroup feature, which can be accessed through the World Wide Web, as an extension of the Listbox mailing list service.

1.
Users who simply want to read or post news articles will be able to do so using their Web browser to open the URL given to them by the owner of the newsgroup. They will see a header at the top of the page with some information about the list, followed by the list of articles which haven't yet expired.
2.
Users who want to create and manage private newsgroups have basically to decide the purpose, the policy and the parameters which will define its profile. This can be done in the same way as for a mailing list. To find out how to do this consult the Listbox documentation:

General information:

http://consult.cern.ch/dci/mail/listbox

List registration form:

http://consult.cern.ch/dci/mail/listbox/doc/list-admins/reg_form

Or contact: Listbox.Support@cern.ch

This project was started in collaboration with Opal and is being generalised for use by other groups at CERN. Watch the news for an announcement of its general availability.
