Interactive Services during CERNVM Rundown

As you almost certainly already know, CERNVM services will stop on 30 June 1996 at midnight. As part of the rundown process, we have made the following plans in connection with the interactive services.

Actions with immediate effect

Several applications, including MAIL, XFIND, XNEWS, and PHONE, will be modified so that when they are started on CERNVM they will display an informative message on the alternative services which are available.

Actions on June 1st

• The POST program will be disabled, so it will no longer be possible to send (post) news items to CERN and other Internet news groups from CERNVM. News readers and most WWW browsers offer equivalent facilities on the alternative Unix and Windows services.
• The database accessed by WHO, PHONE and YELLOW will no longer be updated. If you continue to use these applications on CERNVM during June, you may be accessing out-of-date information. You are recommended to use the equivalent services on alternative platforms.

Recommended Replacements for these Applications

• You may send your texts for posting from any standard News Reader (see the article 5.1 ``Choice of News Readers''), any Web browser having such feature (e.g. Mosaic and Netscape, see the FAQ section in this CNL for further details) or from pine (if you have just a FALCO terminal).
• You may access the CERN Directories through any standard Web browser, at URL:

  or simply using the commands xwho or phone at any service having access to the asis repository (like the central PLUS and WGS CN Services).

If you have further questions

Please remember that all CERNVM services will stop on 30 June 1996. For several months after that date, mail sent to user@cernvm.cern.ch will be forwarded, as far as possible, to the user concerned, by a subrogate mail forwarding system. We ask you to inform your external e-mail correspondents of your new e-mail address, preferably using the recommended form Firstname.Lastname@cern.ch.
